We're in Bangalore. My husband's office is having a formal evening gathering (not a sit-down dinner) but the dress code is black tie or its Indian equivalent. Do I HAVE TO wear a saree? I'm Punjabi and not very comfortable in it (tripped and fell down the last time I wore it.) And can my husband wear a formal kurta-pyjama (dark with embroidery, etc.)? HELP!!! The event is just 10 days away.

The bride is my husband's niece, the wedding is a formal church wedding. The saree I would like to wear is bright yellow. I have asked my sil if it is appropriate for me to wear my tradition dress to the wedding she said it was fine but I never discussed the color. Someone here says bright yellow may be too much and that I'll be brighter than the bride. I now get the feeling that maybe bright colors for guests are not acceptable to American weddings. Wow I'm confuse please help again. I would really like to wear my bright yellow saree but I don't think I should wear it. Just so you get an idea, my husband says it reminds him of a priest. I hope the priest would give you an idea of the color of my saree, it is so elegant but not heavy with embroidery or bead work at all. Just bright yellow silk with a thin red border that does not show that much. My husband says no matter what color I wear people will be drawn to me anyway because my outfit will be exotic. Your thoughts!!!

I know I must sound like such a American, but I want to know. And by the way, what is a salwar-kalmeez? And would wearing traditional clothes like that out in public be considered wierd or do they only wear clothes like that on special occasions? Are "half sarees" limited to southern India? What do teen girls wear in India? Is make-up considered appropriate? I just wanted to know cuz I think the traditional clothes in India are really pretty, with the bright colors and the delicate, ornate embroidery, even if they do look like they take a half hour just to put on.
