i've been looking all over the internet for cheap indian clothing but i can't find any if you know any websites please list them. But i have this feeling that they won't fit me so im planning on making my own but i want to know if they're is anywhere where i can find the patterns to make my own indian clothing can you please help! Thank you! India Rocks!!!
I've recently found out that my great grandparents on my mothers' side of the family came from Bombay (now Mumbai) India, therefore I would like to learn more about the culture there. I'm having a really strong urge to visit there to see where they really came from but I don't think I'm quite ready for that. So are there any good sites where I can learn more about the Indian culture? Thanks in advance
Tara J you just gave me the impression that you're illiterate!
I'm living in India at the moment, and I can't find any clothes that I like. I've searched and searched, even on the internet to find something that I can wear because I thought it might be fun to try wearing them while I'm here.
But I can't find ANYTHING that suits my taste; everything is either in a really bright colour, or covered in golden things, or has some other weirdness about it.
Can someone please help me find something that I might like? I like darker colours, or white, and perhaps something a little more subtle and toned down, and something that fits nicely.
I'm in Chennai, if that helps.
Oh, but I do have to wear their clothes........there is basically nothing else here in India they don't wear western clothes that often, and what they do sell here is absolutely hideous.
This is the only reason I'm asking!!
I know in Pakistan/Afghanistan/India/Maybe even Iran and Bangladesh people wear Shalwar Kameez/Saris/Frocks.....is there any sort of traditional clothing for Arabs besides the thobe for men and abaya for women...?
Assalamu Alaikum
Okay so we all know Pakistan and India are 97% alike, I mean our food, skin color, traditions, language, clothes, movies, music, standards etc are THE SAME, the only difference is Religion.
so as I was saying, in Indian movies, they are very open to nudity, sex scenes/kissing, aldultry, skimpy clothing YET that does not happen in reality, of course it does BUT not as open, just like in Pakistan.
my question is, is it portrayed realisticlly? do indians really wear skimpy clothes like that? do they do stuff like that?
I know being a Pakistani, we dont BUT of course there are always gonna be people that do, but our movie industry does not show it so openly(some do of course) but its always highly critisized, how come not in india? I just saw a beautiful cover of Vouge INDIA with a bikini-clad girl, nice cover but would NEVER happen in Pakistan , not now atleast
Is India ahead of their time in that sense? cuz I always wondered, do indians dress/act like that most of the time..
THANKS
@ joe
yeah but what I'm saying its excepted
girls can wear bikini's etc like its no big deal yet Pkaistani & indian culture is THE SAME and in Pakistan its no where accepted , another thing is when a PK actress does a certain sexy scene she is NOT respected, yet in india its NO BIG DEAl, lol its werid but I wanna know how it got from where it was to where its now
I know its not TRUE portayel of Indians but its accpeted meaning it might have some truth to it
@ Taglo
actually I was reffering to MOVIES, not drama's
yes the drama's arent even close to the movies
Go watch Jab we Met, Jism, Murder(should be rated R)
I mean the Indian women of Asia, India has a 3000 year old civilization
Our rented apartment looks dull, and I want to spruce it up with some color.
I was thinking of using my wedding bangles and a saree (long flowing grarment of one piece, worn in India). You can see pictures of sarees here: http://images.google.com/images?q=saree+&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&start=0
Do you have any ideas for using a long piece of fabric, in decorating a wall? And bangles too.
The saree is around 20' by 3' (I think)
I'd like to use the saree in one piece, but I also welcome other suggestions.
Thanks!

This man is practially worshipping Muslims. Maybe he should be a little more grateful to Hindus who have given him shelter after Muslims kicked him out of Pakistan, and he came as a refugee to India, got food, shelter, clothing and education here So how does he thanks...by working against India!!!
What do you call such a creature as Yogindar Sikand?
Millions of Bengalis (victims of rape and torcher) wher pushed across the border by Pak army forcing India to provide them shelter, refuge food ,clothing and even medical attention.
The Pakistanis justified their actions on grounds of being a superior race to dark skinned Bengalis! A God given right in their eves.
The tables have turned and now Millions of these fair skinned handsom Pakistanis live in tents.
Now do you believe in " What goes around, comes around" and " thou shall reap what thou shall sow" and simply in Insaf?
Khuda ke ghar der hai, Andher Nahin.
Love not
Neither the Bengalis nor Indians are responding to Pak racism.
What Pak is getting is the result of what it has sown in the past by the Law of action and reaction within Pakistan it self.
My husband and I live in Australia together. So, my parents, brother, and sister came from the USA to our "English" wedding in Australia (my father-in-law wanted to but couldn't... he was the only one from hubby's side). This was a very small wedding (10 guests) my husband and I payed for it, and I wore an Indian dress (saree) for my husband. My parents spent ,000 on the trip. They didn't (and still don't) talk to my husband's parents, which my in-laws find very insulting. My family is that way and nothing will change them. We are having a second wedding in India for my husband's family. My parents and brother are coming, only for my husband (his request). They have no interest in this wedding. They are also stopping in Europe, and the total cost for this trip is another ,000. My father-in-law is covering ,000 of the Indian wedding cost and my husband and I are responsible for the rest. My husband also regularly pays his father- monthly- to cover debts and his parent's living cost (basically, we are paying for the whole wedding). My father-in-law just sent an email to my father that very directly and politely asks for ,000 toward the Indian wedding. He added figures (false) to make the cost of the wedding a total of ,000 and said as per universal customs my dad should pay half. My dad answered back a polite no. My dad is furious with this email and my father-in-law is enraged with the reply. Who is right anyway? Should my dad be paying anything? Is there some cultural backing for my father-in-law's anger that I don't understand? I do not feel that my dad should have to pay anything to my father-in-law but now my husband agrees with his father. How do I fix this between the two families? I already feel bad because I would have liked an American wedding with my own family rather than the Australian, and for making my family fly all over the world at their expense.
I'll be in Aligarh on the 21st and Mumbai on the 27th. I've heard that it gets very hot in India, but that women shouldn't wear typical Western hot-weather clothing (shorts, short skirts, tanks, halters, tubes, etc. are considered offensive). I was thinking of packing colorful linen pants, maybe some pretty cotton/ linen tunics and maybe a maxi dress (worn with a shrug or blouse over it)?? I'll be wearing a saree to the wedding, of course, but does anyone have any suggestions for during the day? Thanks a lot!

My husband was watching a documentery about some workers in India. They had a very dangerous job (breaking up ships). One husband told his wife not to wear her bindi during the day only at night when she saw that he got home alive. It left me wondering what a bindi was and what it signifies. Anybody from that culture here that knows the answer? Appretiate your help!
My boyfriend and me are suppose to get married very soon, In august 2007. He's abroad and me too. We are in different countries and we planned to marry in India as he is Indian. I'm writing an essay on Diamond Dust by Anita Desai, and we need to analyze the significance of Diamond, the dog, in the book. Anyways, it takes place in India. So--if someone could give me references, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!
I am somewhat decent with my Pakistani and Indian clothing terms, but I saw a wonderful style of pant, and I need help with finding the name so I can better search for them on the net...I've only ever seen them called "bell bottoms" in stores and online. These pants were worn all the time by Puro in the Hindi movie "PINJAR"
They are basically a normal pant, but at the KNEE, they bell out through the use of gathers, attatching a second piece of fabric at the knee, and the bells look exactly like a skirt. They give a wonderful flowing movement while walking. They differ from the 1960's/Vintage bell bottoms, since these "skirts" are added on to a regular trouser leg, RIGHT above the KNEE, some other styles have the gathers higher or lower, but I do not like that shape/cut.
I hope someone knows what I am talking about...Do they have a specific name? Like salwar, churidars, etc....are they correctly called "Farshi Pajama"?? The illustration /description just shows them MUCH longer...
I found another name for them " Farshi Gharara" but they STILL are too long, and trail on the floor....sigh.....
http://i17.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/fd/01/fe81_1.JPG
These are the pants as sold on ebay, BUT the gathers are above the knee, and not where I'd prefer they'd be, but I can assume they'd be called the same thing in whatever culture they originated...They are imprted from India, but the seller describes them as Boho flared pants, so that gets me no where as far as finding more...
I will be traveling to India soon, and I'm so excited to have a saree hand-made for me! I know very little about sarees, except that they are beautiful.
I really like the style of sari that has the short little blouse on top (exposing the abdomen from below the bustline to just above the waist). What is this style called? I am a young woman, and I want my saree to look sleek and sexy.
More generally-- Is there anything I should make sure the saree has, or does not have? I am referring to certain fabrics, cuts, built-in belts, accessories, etc., that I should ask for in order to get a beautiful, well-fitting, quality dress. I have a friend who said that I should ask to have a belt included, and that Bernarsi fabric is best. What do you think??
Also, any information on proper pricing (and the cost of shipping such an item to the US) that you happen to have off the top of your head would be much appreciated.
Thank you soooooo much!! I can't wait!!!
My sister got married to an Indian man in India 2 months ago and came back and is wearing bindis, bangles, and some necklace and red dye that means she's married or something. She's filing for a spousal visa to bring him here so they can live, so shouldn't she act American and just wear a wedding band instead of dressing in all that stuff? I'm getting married in August and I know she'll come dressed in a saree instead of a normal dress and it'll look weird.
who wears turbuns on thier head... i believe they wear turbuns to cover thier long hair. but why do they have to use a turbun wy cant they do gotti or leave thier hair open. dont you think weaing a turbun in american public and walking on the street can lead them into racism situation. they should change thier way of wearing clothes and thier way of living the life if they wanna convert themselves into modern society of america's. why do they remains typical for life even though they are no longer living in INDIA or PAKISTAN. i have seen many muslim gals covering thier head with scarf and some cover thier whole body under a thing called (burkha) i agree that they do follow thier religion and culture but staying in a country like AMERICA they should not confront in public as a typical human being. i am not making a fun of anyones culture or religion. but its a 21st century and they should learn the way of modern living. no offense to any muslim or indian being.

I live in India and I usually wear sarees! I fofgot to mention this in my last question! The answers I got to my last question do not help much as I wear a saree! I'm 30 years old!
I usually wear sarees and the blouse for the saree always bothers me because when the blouse material is transparent, the outline of my bra can be seen from the back! The climate is hot in India!
My skin colour is very fair! I am whitish brown in colour!
Even my bra hooks and the colour of my bra will be exposed! I always feel a bit shy!
Do any of you have this worry? Which is better, white bra or black bra?
I also need matching blouse and petticoat. I don't know where i can get a blouse stitched accoriding to my size here in the US. It was easier back india.
I am studying abroad in India this coming Spring, and I would really prefer it if I didn't look like a tourist so that I can blend in and really experience the culture. I'm an anthropology major, and I know that if I go around in american gear, I don't think that it would be good, especially because I am a girl... Does anyone know how to sew indian clothing so that I could make myself some before I go so that I don't have to spend as much money as I might have to otherwise? I'm looking for Salwar Kameez, cholis, and maybe the skirts from Kariza designs? Thanks alot!!
I let a friend use my pc and since then I've been seeing ads for indian women's saree's at the top of the page when I compose Yahoo email, on the left side of the page when I read Yahoo news, etc... It's driving me NUTS! I'm sick n tired of seeing the bare bellied women!
I've cleared cookies, deleted history, ran the cr*p cleaner software. Nothing is getting rid of the bare bellied beauty.
I've even tried going to dubai based sites and other arab sites because I remember a while ago I was getting ads for Etihad Airways which apparently had something to do with me looking at arab type sites.
Btw, yes my friend is of south asia indian origin and no I'm not based in India nor do I use Yahoo India when I see the web ad that's driving me nuts!
How can I get it to stop?! I need to wipe something clean, but what? Like I said I've tried quite a few things already. boo hoo!
ok so now I'm getting an ad "Dubai airfare" from a site called airfare.travelsearch.com , no problem I guess. But this is only on the Yahoo answer pages. I'm still gettin the gal in the purple saree on other yahoo pages even when I've refreshed page
btw, I already changed my yahoo preferences to various different locations...Singapore, China, etc... no luck.
