I've recently found out that my great grandparents on my mothers' side of the family came from Bombay (now Mumbai) India, therefore I would like to learn more about the culture there. I'm having a really strong urge to visit there to see where they really came from but I don't think I'm quite ready for that. So are there any good sites where I can learn more about the Indian culture? Thanks in advance
Tara J you just gave me the impression that you're illiterate!
Okay so we all know Pakistan and India are 97% alike, I mean our food, skin color, traditions, language, clothes, movies, music, standards etc are THE SAME, the only difference is Religion.
so as I was saying, in Indian movies, they are very open to nudity, sex scenes/kissing, aldultry, skimpy clothing YET that does not happen in reality, of course it does BUT not as open, just like in Pakistan.
my question is, is it portrayed realisticlly? do indians really wear skimpy clothes like that? do they do stuff like that?
I know being a Pakistani, we dont BUT of course there are always gonna be people that do, but our movie industry does not show it so openly(some do of course) but its always highly critisized, how come not in india? I just saw a beautiful cover of Vouge INDIA with a bikini-clad girl, nice cover but would NEVER happen in Pakistan , not now atleast
Is India ahead of their time in that sense? cuz I always wondered, do indians dress/act like that most of the time..
THANKS
@ joe
yeah but what I'm saying its excepted
girls can wear bikini's etc like its no big deal yet Pkaistani & indian culture is THE SAME and in Pakistan its no where accepted , another thing is when a PK actress does a certain sexy scene she is NOT respected, yet in india its NO BIG DEAl, lol its werid but I wanna know how it got from where it was to where its now
I know its not TRUE portayel of Indians but its accpeted meaning it might have some truth to it
@ Taglo
actually I was reffering to MOVIES, not drama's
yes the drama's arent even close to the movies
Go watch Jab we Met, Jism, Murder(should be rated R)

I personally think the Indian culture is closer to the Asian (oriental) culture. Both cultures stress respect to elders, peace of mind, meditation, discipline, familial bonds...basically Buddhism for the most part.
Besides, Indians and Chinese are hella smart and successful in Academics.

In the movie Slumdog Millionaire, there is a lot of yellow. Specifically, it is worn by Latika in the scenes where she is with Jamal. I noticed it a lot at least, but I haven't seen the movie in a little. And the screen is tinted yellow when he has flashbacks of her. Then in the credits, where everyone is dancing, there is a lot of yellow being waved around and worn throughout the whole thing. Is this a significant color in Indian culture?
Hi, my question is would it be offensive for someone not of the hindu religion or Indian culture to buy and wear a sari? I'm in the process of helping someone plan a wedding and she really thought they were beautiful and loves indian culture so she's wondering would she be able to wear a sari and have i guess a indian style wedding. I just hope no one gets offended.
Is it really weird in Indian culture to marry your cousin? If he is 7 years older than you? But what if you both really loved each other?

I saw an episode of WEtv's wedding central and a couple gave up their wedding plans to the show and were given a culture clash wedding, it turned out to be South asian Indian. I watched the show and saw how much family meant to indian culture and how much the family is involved in the wedding. To me it would mean alot to be able to have this kind of wedding because my family hasn't always been in my life however they very sacred to me and i would love the idea of having them in various parts of the wedding down to the saree. I just don't want to offend anyone in any culture, but i want my day to be memorable.

I don't want to know how WESTERN theatre and culture have affected Indian culture..I wanna know how Indian THEATRE has influenced modern Western culture. To anyone who answers this--THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! x]
It seems to be a country in between two cultures, you could almost say that it is the border nation between middle east and south east asia. I am just asking because i know that for example indians, most of their culture has been formed from their religions (culture) for example the tabala, indian flute and sitar are all instruments blessed and used by hindu gods, the sikh doll and bhangra orginated from the seeks, the clothing as well, although i have heard that the saree has been worn by muslims but that is a clothing worn by hindu gods. But yet pakistanis seem to be also obsessed with their middle eastern countaparts as they have also extracted a lot of culure from there. Most of the pakistanis in my area seem to be more confident in an indian community than a middle eastern community.
Some questions for pakistanis if you are reading this question
Do you feel more connected to the indian culure or the middle eastern culture??? and why??
Do you feel more middle eastern than south east asian and why???
Do you feel that your religion is what makes you different to indians or do you feel that you have your own culure and why???
I want to know, although pakistan was once india and therefore indian culture was likely to be taken to pakistan when it was formed, i want to know whether they feel that they are completely different to indians and what makes them so.
ANYONE ELSE CAN ANSWER THIS QUESTION TOO WHETHER YOU ARE INDIAN, PAKISTANI, WHITE , WHATEVER.
I think i have to agree with most people here, i think pakistanis feel more middle eastern due to their religion which has a huge influence. I think we forget that muslims in india feel more embraced with the south asian culture because they are in india but pakistanis in the the other hand will have a different atmosphere there.
I think aswell as the years go by that they will feel more embraced with the middle eastern culture espacially how the muslim religion has been targeted as the enemy and therefore making them feel more alienated and secluded.
I saw the show "Boogie Woogie" and loved it. I have never seen people dance like that before. It was not so much the dance techniques. It just looked like the people were dancing for themselves and really enjoying. Is this part of Indian culture (I don't know much about India)? Or is this kind of dancing uncommon in India?
I'm making a poster board for my project and I have to have pictures of the Indian Culture.
